DBS Checking of Private Tutors

DBS Checked Tutors

Those of you who have had this discussion with me before about the importance of a parent verifying the name, qualification, address and school position of the person they have just allowed to work with their child may be secretly saying, “Here he goes again, standing on his soapbox, preaching to the converted!”.  Well, my message to you is that from my ‘soapbox’, I continue to hear unbelievable stories from new clients about their experiences of private tuition, to the extent where I am no longer surprised.

It is not a legal requirement for self-employed private tutors to obtain a DBS check in the UK. However, parents should insist that their tutor has one. Cheshire Tutors always explain prior to the lesson commencing, that parents must ask to see proof that they have a DBS.  In fact, we are actually disappointed if a parent isn’t concerned and is more than happy to let a complete stranger into their house to work unsupervised with their child.

As of 17th June 2013, The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) merged to become the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).  DBS certificate is an official document proving that there is no known reason why an individual may not work with children or vulnerable adults after a background screening for relevant criminal convictions in police records.  DBS checks are often required for those who work with children or vulnerable adults as well as volunteers as verification that they have no criminal history which may make their presence unsuitable. Consequently, parents can be reassured that real qualified teachers, practising in a school environment will have no problem in producing their DBS. Not only that, but they will also be able to point out their name on the school website and will likely have a passport for further confirmation of who they are. Cheshire Tutors actively encourage and then if necessary, insist upon, parents having such a conversation before any lesson begins.

I am though, continually disappointed because it seems that my message isn’t getting through, so I will continue to bang my drum louder than ever, this issue is hugely important and something not to be underestimated.

Parents, students and tutors should recognise that the benefits DBS verification as with other certifications or qualifications mean that tuition takes place in trusting, safe and secure environments. Perhaps due to our policy that all staff at Cheshire Tutors possess a higher level, enhanced DBS, it is a part of the reason why we are able to provide the best professional educators and we continue to have 100% satisfaction feedback.

At Cheshire Tutors we have an established reputation for student development, proven results and a personable approach, we are a dedciated and unique network comprising the very best tutors around. Please feel free to contact us with any tuition queries.
